Bluetooth based Home Automation using Arduino

Smart Home System is the term that describes the intelligent control and monitoring of different home appliances to manage the home environment in an intelligent, safe and comfortable way. Home automation allows us to control home appliances like TV, Refrigerator, AC, fan, etc. Home automation not only refers to reduce human efforts but also plays vital role to save energy and time. The main objective of home automation is to help handicapped and old aged people it will facilitate them to control home appliances. In the present era smart phone market has been dominated by the Android operating system. Smart phones features made to communicate to any other devices using Bluetooth technology.

Automation is also involved in building management system in which lights, temperature, security devices and other appliances are controlled through a high degree of computer involvement. Home automation is not a new thing but the advanced automation system in nowadays require a big and expensive infrastructure. In this report, we have proposed a low cost, flexible secure automation system that can easily control TV, tube lights and fans from android based mobile phone using Bluetooth. Here HC-05 Bluetooth module and 8-bit microcontroller atmel89s52 is used for switching. A feedback circuit is also designed and implement to check the current status of the device after it receives the command from mobile phone.

2 transistors are added for logic level conversion… bluetooth module is 3.3V logic while PIC is 5V….. We are using an Android application named “Bluetooth Terminal” which can be easily found on Google Play Store and installed on the phone. Bluetooth module works on 3.3v only for which another power supply section has to be made. For this I have used LM317 voltage regulator which can provide output ranging from 1.2v to 36v. My answer would be simple because I am way too lazy and want to control things sitting at one place.

Home Automation System has been designed using PIC 16F876A microcontroller and HC-06 bluetooth module. It can control a number of home appliances like lights, fans, bulbs and many more using electro-mechanical relay. When the circuit is powered on, the Arduino loads the required libraries and switches relays to OFF position. Some initial messages are flashed on the LCD display and the status of all the four devices is shown OFF on the LCD. The Arduino waits for the numeric command to be received from the Bluetooth module.

thoughts on “Arduino based Home Automation using Bluetooth”

Smart refrigerators, such as LG’s Smart ThinQ, allow you to scan grocery store receipts and keep an inventory of your items, and alerts you if an item is about to expire. More impressively, it suggests recipes based on your refrigerator’s contents and lets you know when you need to replace items. Smart ovens synch with your smartphone and automatically preheat to the correct temperature based on a recipe selected from your database. While these appliance options seem a bit superficial and convenience based, there is a conservation factor as well.

IDE stands for Integrated Development Environment, entire programming for proposed system is done in Arduino IDE tool. Baud rate is set to 9600 bits per second for serial communication between Arduino board and smartphone. Arduino IDE command "Serial. A vailable 0" is used to receive data serially from smartphone and "Serial.printlnO" command is used to transmit data serially from Arduino board to smartphone. The boards can be assembled by hand or purchased preassembled; the open source IDE can be downloaded for free. The Arduino Uno is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega328.

Conversely, the system will be alerted to dry conditions and supply the necessary amount of nourishment, without over-watering. There are two types of pins on the whole 16×2 LCD module. Some pins are used to send to 16×2 LCD and some are command pins. In other words, every pin has a role in controlling a single pixel on the display.16 x 2 LCD has sixteen columns and two rows. That means, it can display sixteen characters per row and it has two such rows. The numbers are transferred to the interfaced Bluetooth module from the paired smart phone.

Refer to the schematic diagram to have a clearer idea of the connections. We have a dedicated tutorial regarding interfacing 16×2 LCD display with Arduino with some example sketches. Have a look at it before proceeding further for a better understanding of the LCD. We will require the following components for this project.

This project of home automation using Bluetooth and Arduino can be used for controlling any AC or DC devices. To drive this DC Fan and Light, a 9V battery is connected. Use case possibilities with Bluetooth low energy in IoT.

What are the disadvantages of using home automation via Bluetooth? What is the advantage of using bluetooth for home automation? This project can provide the facility of monitoring all the appliances with in the communication range through Bluetooth. Keywords- Home automation; Smartphone; Arduino; Bluetooth; Home appliances. And we need to connect bulb, fan, buzzer to these relays. We can replace Bluetooth by GSM modem so that we can achieve device controlling by sending SMS using GSM modem.

Home automation is the act of converting a traditional home into a “smart” home. By adding advanced technologies — like sensors and communication modules — into everyday household appliances. These devices connect to a network that homeowners can access to see data about their homes. Will smart kitchen appliances actually make you a better cook?

This results in lower use of household resources and less cost on house maintenance and monthly living expenses. The home automation system controls all connected devices in real-time, while scheduled tasks are executed across devices by the home automation system. Its connection speeds can be lowered or even disrupted by having other Wi-Fi devices in the same general area. The good news is that most home automation endpoints are not bandwidth hogs, so response time may not matter. Battery consumption is also problematic, as Wi-Fi consumes much more power than other technologies, and when combined with its limited bandwidth, it may not be an optimal solution.

The communication is done one by one at one time in both direction between the android mobile phone and Bluetooth module. This article describes the implementation of a Bluetooth technology and an android application with voice prompts based home-automated system using an Arduino microcontroller. The system is aimed at designing an automated appliance control that is user-friendly and convenient to use. The design comprised an Arduino ATMEGA328 microcontroller board, Bluetooth module (HC-06), and an android application . The Arduino controls any connected component and was programmed with C++ programming language by using Integrated Development Environment . Relays and Triacs are used for the switching mechanism.

The system switches the home appliances ON and OFF using the android app, Bluetooth module, and voiced prompt. It can also be timed to switch off appliances for a pre-time of 12 h, thus making the application easy and convenient to operate via a smartphone. The client modules communicate with the host controller through a wireless device such as a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, in this case, an android based Smart phone. Arduino based home automation using Bluetooth project helps the user to control any electronic device using Device Control app on their Android Smartphone. The android app sends commands to the controller – Arduino, through wireless communication, namely, Bluetooth. The Arduino is connected to the main PCB which has five relays as shown in the block diagram.
